Can dogs eat strawberries?

Yes, dog can eat strawberries.  Strawberries are packed with vitamins and minerals which are good for your dog’s teeth, immune system and overall health.

8 benefits of strawberries for dogs:

1. Strawberries contain powerful antioxidants which are thought to protect against inflammation, cancer and heart disease.

2. Strawberries contain significant amounts of phytonutrients and flavonoids which makes strawberries bright red and super healthy.

3. The antioxidants found in strawberries can help to protect your dog’s gums and teeth from decay and infection.

4. Strawberries provide dietary fibre and diverse nutrients that can help your dog feel full, keep her nutritionally satisfied, and avoid excess weight gain, which can be difficult to shed!

5. The vitamin C found in strawberries can help boost your dog’s immunity and protect her against a variety of pathogens and potential infections that she’s exposed to every day.

6. Over long periods of time strawberries can help reduce the effects of ageing.

7. Strawberries boost fibre which is good for digestion.

8. Strawberries are low in calories so you don’t have to worry too much about your dog’s weight when feeding them as a treat or food topper.

How many strawberries?

Strawberries are high in natural sugars which can cause tummy ache if a dog eats too many.  One or two strawberries make for a healthy snack. Remove the stem and the leaves and cut the strawberry into small bits.  It’s best to start off by feeding small amounts to make sure your dog isn’t allergic to them.

The kinds of strawberries not to feed…

Canned strawberries, strawberries in syrup, strawberry ice cream, yogurt and jams are unhealthy for dogs because they contain all sorts of sweeteners and artificial additives.

Frozen strawberry + coconut oil dog treat recipe

Tiffin doesn’t like strawberries in their raw form so I needed to find a way to disguise the strawberry as I want her to get all the benefits listed above.  I thought about water but decided on coconut oil as it’s amazing!  It does so many good things for us, but it’s really good for our dogs, too.  Especially their coat and skin! I’m pleased to say that Tiffin loves her frozen strawberry + coconut oil dog treats.  I add one to her food regularly so that she gets the benefit of coconut oil and give her one or two during the day as a treat just to make her happy. Woof Woof!

What you’ll need:

  • Small silicone mould – I used a [easyazon_link identifier=”B01MZ8EEGX” locale=”UK” tag=”thwowo09-21″]shell shape mould[/easyazon_link]
  • A small baking tray or something flat
  • About 100ml of coconut oil (the amount depends on the size of the moulds)
  • 1 medium/large strawberry

What to do:

1. Place the silicone mould onto the baking tray or onto something flat because it’s difficult to carry it when it’s full of liquid.

2. Chop the strawberry into small chunks and place a chunk into each mould

3. Heat coconut oil in a saucepan until it becomes a liquid

4. Allow coconut oil to cool for a few minutes, then carefully pour oil into each mould.  Any unused oil can be poured back into the jar.

5. Carefully place the silicone mould into the fridge to solidify; it’s best to leave them in the fridge overnight

6. When the coconut oil treats are solid, pop them out of the moulds.

7. Store coconut oil treats in a bag in the freezer

8. Feed to your dog as a treat or pop on top of your dog’s food

Tiffin and her friend Saffie loved them.  Let me know what your dog thinks 🙂
